Citizens, Work Hours, and Sleep in Pax Autocratica

Give workers quarters, set working hours, recognize fatigue, and account for units that do not need sleep or food. Includes the confirmed numeric rules.

Base labor is not a permanent 24-hour resource. Provide sleeping quarters, use work schedules deliberately, and watch worker condition instead of assigning every citizen to uninterrupted research or gathering.

What it is

Soldiers work during designated hours, and overworked soldiers can enter a fatigue state. Base management gives you directives and working-hour controls rather than a system where every worker stays active forever.

How to unlock it

Follow the opening route to repair the Command Center, research the Barracks blueprint, and construct the Barracks. Proper quarters protect soldiers from cold nights and help keep them in good condition.

How to operate it

Assign jobs during configured working hours and leave time for rest. The management screen supports uniform working hours, 24 hours of paid leave, and temporary assignments. If the population grows, compare available quarters with the number of workers who need them.

Not every unit has the same needs: robots and some other units do not need sleep or food. That exemption is confirmed for robots specifically, and this guide does not extend it to every non-human unit.

Numeric rules

A directive can be set as low as 3 hours of sleep, but that is proof the schedule is configurable, not a recommendation. No published result establishes a safe or optimal sleep length, so do not force every biological worker onto three hours.

Common mistakes

  • Assigning continuous work without checking fatigue or living needs.
  • Building no Barracks because a robot on the roster does not need sleep.
  • Assuming all non-human units share the robot exemption.
  • Copying a three-hour schedule as a proven optimum.

When to use it or avoid it

Use longer work periods only when an urgent repair or research task justifies the tradeoff and worker condition remains stable. Add quarters as the biological workforce grows. Robots can cover needs-sensitive gaps when their displayed requirements confirm they do not need sleep or food; do not infer that exemption from appearance alone.

Return to the Beginner Guide. Build the first quarters through Food Supply, and avoid overloading the same worker with Command Center research.

FAQ

Do workers need somewhere to sleep?

Yes. Workers need quarters, and the tutorial directs you to build a Barracks.

Do robots need sleep and food?

Robots and some other units do not. That does not mean every non-human unit is exempt.

Is three hours of sleep the best schedule?

Not proven. Three hours is simply a value the schedule allows; nothing establishes it as optimal.
